Reserve, located in the heart of the Gila National Forest, is an isolated rural ranching village in the largest county (Catron) in the state. The Gila Wilderness (est. 1924) is the oldest wilderness area in the U. S. with over a half million acres of wild, rugged mountains. With three national forests on all sides (Gila, Apache, Cibola), Reserve is a natural gateway by Forest Service roads for hikers, bird-watchers, photographers, hunters, and campers.
