Surrounded by rich farmland, the historic and picturesque Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh (formerly known as San Juan Pueblo) is the largest of the Tewa speaking pueblos, and it was the first Spanish settlement in the area that is now New Mexico. The village is located on the east side of the Rio Grande, about five miles north of Española, and 30 miles northeast of Santa Fe. San Juan is the headquarters of the Eight Northern Indian Pueblo Indian Council, a coalition government comprised of Governors from each of the eight northern pueblos. The artists of the pueblo are known for the interesting designs incised into the brown and red clays of its pottery.
