Set in a beautiful mountainous landscape, the Pueblo of Jemez is located 45 miles (approx.) northwest of Albuquerque. Jemez Pueblo is located within the southern end of the majestic Cañon de San Diego. The present site of the Jemez Pueblo has been occupied since the 16th century, with many of the building dating back to the period following the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Jemez is the only remaining Pueblo where people speak the Towa dialect. The Pueblo has passed its language down orally and is unwritten. The Jemez people are internationally renowned for their woven wickerwork baskets, pottery, figurines, holiday ornaments and storytellers. The Jemez people also have a long history of outstanding long-distance runners. |
